Legacy Giving

Planned giving, or legacy giving, is a wonderful way to ensure that learning, sharing, and making music together changes lives beyond your own lifetime. By including the Manchester Community Music School in your estate plans, you help sustain our programs, support student scholarships, and invest in the future of music in our wider community.

Ways You Can Create a Legacy for the Future

Bequests

  • Include MCMS in your will or trust by specifying a dollar amount, a percentage of your estate, or a residual amount.
  • You can also donate specific assets, such as real estate, fine jewelry or antiques, stocks and bonds, etc. Donations of appreciated assets may provide tax benefits while supporting our mission.

Beneficiary Designations

You can designate MCMS as a beneficiary to life insurance policies, retirement accounts, bank or brokerage accounts.  These gifts are simple to arrange and do not require modifying your will or trust.

QUALIFIED CHARITABLE DISTRIBUTION DONATIONS

If you’re at the age that requires Required Minimum Distribution to be taken from your retirement accounts, you can donate all or a portion of those withdrawals as a Qualified Charitable Distribution.  Aside from supporting the school, a QCD is a tax advantaged way to give!

DONOR ADVISED FUNDS

Donor Advised Funds are a charitable giving vehicle that allows individuals to contribute to a charitable fund, receive an immediate tax deduction, and then recommend grants to qualified charities over time. It’s like a charitable investment account, where assets can be invested and grow tax-free before being distributed to charities. Upon your passing, the fund can continue to be invested to provide future grants, or with an advanced directive all of the assets in the fund can be distributed to the charities you support.

How Your Legacy Gift Can be Utilized:

MCMS ENDOWMENT FUND

  • Endowment fund are invested to generate growth over the long term. The earnings generates a sustainable stream of income, leaving the majority of the principal to grow in perpetuity and create additional future income.
  • The Fund welcomes gifts including cash, bequests, stock, life insurance and retirement assets.
  • The endowment is unrestricted and can be applied where they are most needed.

Designated (Restricted) Gifts

If you prefer, you can direct your support to a specific program, ensemble, or need. Designated gifts can fund scholarships, building maintenance and improvements, instrument purchases and repairs, or a particular department such as jazz, voice, or orchestra.

“At my lowest point, I struggled with depression and self-harm . . . But throughout that time, the Manchester Community Music School became a lifeline for me.”
