“I’ve been to several music school galas, and I’m still not convinced that we are worthy of being in the company of the recipients of this award! Having said that, we are ecstatic to be included! Neither of us are musicians, though we were both underachieving piano students and high school choristers. The high point of Stephen’s musical career was singing the part of Snoopy in ‘You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown.’ Mine was the one time I accompanied the Verona HS Choir in a performance of ‘Movin.’ Nowadays, we sing out the hymns at church, and listen to records while we cook dinner.

We first noticed the MCMS when we went to some concerts to support a student who played the flute in the orchestra. We’ve enjoyed the ‘Music’s on the Menu’ lunchtime concerts at Grace Church for years. Then we were tremendously moved by the stories we heard at a series of house parties, including our own, where young Rory Cunningham wowed our neighbors and friends with his cello and his personality. A few years later, people asked me who I knew, to get Rory and Alex to play at my 60th birthday party!

Now Alex is ‘1st chair’ and Rory is at Julliard!

We’ve been happy and honored to support the Manchester Community Music School because we’ve seen some of the results and we’re convinced that it’s a huge asset to our city, and adds immeasurably to the quality of all of our lives.” – Michael Duffy II
