Join us on Wednesday, December 18, 2019, 12:10pm at Grace Episcopal Church, as the Manchester Community Music School (MCMS) presents “Jazz Explorations” as part of its Music’s on the Menu Free Concert Series.
The concert will feature MCMS faculty members Jared Steer on drum set, Scott Kiefner on bass, and fellow musician Phil Sargent on guitar. “The music we chose for this program consists mostly original pieces that capture the essence of what we each listen to and study. It could be classified under the modern jazz umbrella, however it’s music that draws from many influences such as traditional jazz, ethnic music from the Balkans, rhythms of Africa, the avant garde, and rock and roll,” stated Steer.
Audience members will be treated to a variety of works including Early Serenity, Rest Stop, Life, Kelita and Me Fa Me Re – originals by guitarist Phil Sargent which draw from a variety of influences, most prominently the odd meters and eastern tonalities of ethnic Balkan music and modern jazz improvisation. Sea Legs a piece by bassist Scott Kiefner which embodies the feeling of standing strong. As well as, Chelsea Bridge an impressionistic jazz standard composed by Billy Strayhorn, which was heavily influenced by the work of Claude Debussy.
