Private LessonsAGES: ELEMENTARY SCHOOL - ADULT

 Individual instruction is the core of a music education and MCMS is committed to finding the program of study that is appropriate for each student. After an admission consultation with the Director of Education, the student is assigned to a faculty member whose teaching style most closely complements the student's learning style. The exact program of study is determined by the faculty member, based on the student's goals and levels of accomplishment. Every opportunity is taken to guarantee the student's success in the chosen course of study. Classes are available to supplement the private instruction curriculum, such as music technology, music theory and chamber music ensembles. Enjoyment of the learning process is key, as is a commitment from the student and family to a disciplined and consistent practice schedule. The instructor will prepare a written student evaluation at the end of each term and is available at any time for consultations. Parents or guardians are welcome to observe lessons. What is included with private lessons?Yearly tuition includes 32 lessons plus two workshop or recital performance opportunities. Also included are performance workshops, which occur on a monthly basis. An accompanist is provided for recital rehearsals and performances at no additional charge to the student. Students receive discounts on recording services and some classes. Each registered student is admitted at no charge to all Manchester Chamber Players Performances, faculty conducted workshops and school-sponsored masterclasses. MCMS often has discount ticket opportunities with the Granite State Opera, the Palace Theater, and the New Hampshire Philharmonic Orchestra for registered students and their families.
- 30 minute lessons: $1273 ($75 deposit, plus 5 payments of $239.60)
- 45 minute lessons: $1756 ($75 deposit, plus 5 payments of $336.20)
- 60 minute lessons: $2342 ($75 deposit, plus 5 payments of $453.40)

Instruction for instruments not listed above may be offered if there is sufficient interest. Adapted programming and Music Therapy are available for students with special needs. Private lessons during the Summer are also available. Performance WorkshopsTo complement private lessons, students are encouraged to take advantage of performance workshop opportunities at no additional charge. This ongoing workshop is designed as an informal performance opportunity for students to gain experience and strengthen playing skills. Sign-up occurs monthly. No charge for students registered for private lessons at MCMS. What is the Suzuki Method?
The Suzuki Method of music education began in the middle of the 20th century by Japanese violinist Shinichi Suzuki. Dr. Suzuki believed that the best and most effective way to learn music is to be exposed to it from a very early age. He calls this the "mother tongue" method - young children learn to play an instrument in the same way that they learn their own language: by listening, absorbing, and copying. The parent attends the lesson as an integral part of the learning process. When the child begins learning, it is by ear - music reading is taught later. In general, the age at which a child is taught to read music is the same as when he or she is learning to read books in his or her own language. Dr. Suzuki does not subscribe to the belief that only certain people are born with a "gift" or "talent", rather that each child has infinite potential. In teaching a child music, a medium for the emotional and spiritual growth of the child is being created.
Suzuki String Program

This course is designed for children or adults to learn to play the violin or cello in a positive and nurturing environment. Each student will have a private lesson once a week for 30 minutes, and will also participate in a monthly group lesson. Students are taught the elements of string playing through musical games and individual and group instruction. We include concentration and listening skills, memorization, posture, rhythms, tone production, and instrument care. Each child must be accompanied by a parent/guardian during classes. Because parental participation is essential to the success of the student's progress, this class is open only to the student and designated parent/guardian. For young students, additional workshops will be available to improve listening skills in an ensemble, and learn to follow a conductor. We have successful Suzuki students ranging in age from 3 to 87 years old. We welcome all ages!
